Award-Winning Austin Composer Explores Women's Resilience in Free, One-Night-Only Multimedia Performance

Music, art, and dance unite to explore the feminine experience at Women & Their Work

In a time when women's voices and experiences resonate with renewed urgency, acclaimed Austin composer Catherine Davis will debut her latest work, "Canticles for the Innocent," in a free, one-night-only multimedia performance on December 14th at Women & Their Work. The performance redefines innocence as a form of strength, and features the Innocentia Quartet, internationally-exhibited visual artist Denise Prince, and acclaimed choreographer Kaita Mrazek.

Davis, whose previous work earned an Austin Critics' Table Award, brings her signature intuitive, emotive style to this deeply personal exploration of women's journeys through acceptance, renewal, and release. The performance builds on her distinguished history of site-specific works, including collaborations with Ballet Austin, the Blanton Museum, and renowned artists Teresa Hubbard and Alexander Birchler.

"The title 'Canticles for the Innocent' speaks to the strength I see in the feminine experience," says Davis. "It reflects the misperception of innocence as naivety, and through this music, it's about honoring and celebrating that strength."

The evening features live performances of three distinct song cycles, with the Innocentia Quartet bringing Davis's compositions to life while visual projections by Prince and movement by Mrazek create a fully immersive experience. One piece, "Sunken Garden," holds particular significance, composed during Davis's journey into motherhood and exploring themes of presence, identity, and acceptance.

This free performance is made possible through the City of Austin's Live Music Fund Event Program, reflecting the city's commitment to nurturing innovative local artists.
